40 Years of The Numbers Band: A Celebration with Robert Kidney

If you spend a few minutes talking with vocalist Robert Kidney of The Numbers Band, you’ll quickly realize that the man has a few stories – and he’s willing to share them, but you have to have time, because there’s a lot to talk about. Kidney’s soft spoken voice reminds me of another storyteller – radio’s legendary crank Garrison Keillor, and from a personality standpoint, there are definitely similarities. As mellow as Kidney might seem on the surface, the legendary fire still flares at the mention of certain topics, like the meaning behind the numeric “15-60-75” sequence that inspired the name of The Numbers Band. (Although he was smiling when he barked “I can’t talk about that!” in response to my question about the digits during a radio interview.)

This year marks the 40th anniversary for The Numbers Band, a musical entity that has covered, crossed and destroyed many genres through the years that they’ve been making music. Officially, Kidney and The Numbers Band will celebrate their 40th anniversary on Saturday night at The Kent Stage, opening the evening with their own set that will eventually shift into an extended jam with musical friends from both past and present. The band’s 35th anniversary set at the same venue ran for nearly four hours, so you can be assured that you’ll get your money’s worth.
