So dig this one:  I got an email last week from Baron Reventón, creator of last week’s awesome MMM.  B-Rev asks me if I’d be interested in a Monday Morning Mix from Jets Overhead, one of my favorite recent musical discoveries!

The Jets Overhead No Nations disc has been great summertime listening here in the ATV household, and I only wish I would have taken notice of them in time to catch them at Bonnaroo.  But alas, I missed them unfortunately, and while they were on stage at the ‘Roo, I was probably hunting for shade.  Lame.

With a new record out on Neil Young’s record label, Vapor Records (Tegan & Sara, Everest, Acetone, etc;) Jets Overhead have been turning the heads of quite a few folks lately, including a dispatch this past weekend from industry blogger Bob Lefsetz, who says:

“No Nations” contains the essence that had me lying on my bedroom floor listening on headphones, going to the gig to hear these songs live.  It’s a feeling.  And it’s about the music.

Baron has been bending my ear about Jets Overhead for quite a while now, and I’m glad that I finally took the time to hear the music, and get that feeling that Bob describes above.

We’re thrilled to welcome Adam and Antonia from Jets Overhead for today’s mix selections.  It’s a triple-first for ATV:  First husband/wife mix, first mix from an artist, and the first mix featuring cross-court commentary from Adam and Antonia, with Adam commenting on Antonia’s picks, and vice versa.  The results are sublime, and we think you’ll enjoy it a lot.  This is potentially the most diverse Monday Mix to date.

As we enjoy a heat wave here on the south coast of Vancouver Island (Canada), Antonia and I thought we might choose songs, new and old, that help us stay cool.  Shade supplying tunes that ease us through the hottest of days even in the dead of winter. Grab a glass of sangria or a steering wheel and crank the a.c. as we cruise into the evening together, wherever.

1. High On Sunday 51 – Aimee Mann – from Lost in Space — “adam used to play this one at his cool open-mic night with an amazing singer named amy.  i loved listening to them sing together on the heartbreakingly gorgeous chorus.  gave me goosebumps.”

2. Flashover – Howie Beck – from How To Fall Down in Public — “adam’s sister likes to listen to certain songs over and over again till we all want to smash the stereo.  this is one of those songs and i think its obvious why:  this tune is chock-a-block full of serious, no-nonsense HOOKS.”

3. General Specific – Band Of Horses – from Cease to Begin — “knee slapping summer afternoon microbrew drinking whistfully thinking about someone kind of song.  one of adam’s fave bands over the last few years. ”

4. El Manana – Gorillaz – from Demon Days — “aaaahhh the lovely satisfying sound of acoustic guitar coming in perfectly timed and mixed on an electronic track.  adam and i think this stuff is the shiz-naz.  makes your body move.  lots of memories of listening to this record while on tour across canada.  i used to get mad at adam (you’re putting this on AGAIN?) and then it would sound so good that i’d eat my words and just dig it.”

5. Help Me Make It Through This Funky Day – Greg Brown – from In The Dark with You“this is the kind of stuff we listen to now cause we’re married and all.  but seriously, an amazing track from a beautiful, funky album about cruising, bewildered and bemused,  into the middle age of life.”

6. My Antonia – Emmylou Harris  – from Red Dirt Girl –“cute choice, babe.  i think the only song i’ve ever heard of with my name in it.  but she pronouces it wrong.  but all is forgiven since emmylou is so bloody AWESOME.”

7. Chorus Of The Hebrew Slaves – Verdi: Nabucco – from Verdi:  Greatest Hits“someday, when we’re old and crispy, adam and i will join a choir and be elderly, happy choir creatures.  if we’re lucky.”

8. Ceu – 10 Contados – from the album Ceu — “flying to gigs is not antonia’s favorite thing to do, this artist (who’s brazilian I believe) is on repeat in her ears to calm her nerves through turbulent air.”

9. Erykah Badhu – The Healer – from New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)“our good buddy and roadie “the seal” praises antonia for putting this track on a driving mix for him when he recently drove our van back from winnipeg to victoria for us after a jets tour. we had to fly onward to toronto.”

10. Ryan Adams – Mockingbird Sing — “the two of us saw ryan and the cardinals at the legendary commodore ballroom in vancouver a couple years back. he melted down on stage (nothing new). it was a love/hate kind of show but we were both struck by his voice; it sounded undeniably, unattainably incredible. one of the few artists that we both agreed has a live voice that recording cannot do justice, although his albums are still fantastic.

11. Paul Simon – Can’t Run But – from The Rhythm of the Saints“antonia knows every word to every paul simon song.  she grew up on his stuff and i can say without a doubt that i owe paul a debt of gratitude more than any other artist for teaching antonia to harmonize with the male voice as naturally as she blinks.”

12. Talking Heads – This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) – from Speaking in Tongues —  “another band that i must credit antonia with getting me in to. i was living in a rhythm-less world until she played me their album ‘naked’. (side note – she chose this album in elementary school (i can’t remember which grade) as her favorite album and was teased by the other kids because of it’s title – i really respect her for that.)”

13. Ibrahim Ferrer – Buenos Hermanos“this woman loves chill latin music. especially when it’s cuban – this guy is from buena vista social club.”

14. Neil Young – Prairie Wind – from Prairie Wind“this song puts a smile on her face every time she hears it – especially when we are driving.”

    just your articles? I mean, what you say is important and everything.
    However just imagine if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your
    posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips,
    this site could certainly be one of the most
    beneficial in its niche. Good blog!
