Quite a few show announcements have been hitting our email in the past 48 hours, so I thought I’d share a few of them with you here.  While it hasn’t been officially announced by Live Nation, I’m very excited to finally see a Cleveland date confirmed for Jackson Browne and David Lindley (with full band).  Browne has a slew of new dates up on his website, including shows in Detroit on September 18th, and a subsequent Cleveland gig on September 19th at the Time Warner Cable Amphitheater (ticket info and on-sale date TBA).

The tour is a celebration of a new acoustic live release from Browne and Lindley called Love is Strange, a double CD release recorded live in Spain in 2006.

From their multiplatinum 1987 debut, Yo! Bum Rush the Show!, to seven records later, Public Enemy’s influence on hip-hop and rap shows little sign of slowing down. Arguably the most frequently sampled rap artists of all time, they proclaim, “We got a right to be angry.” They’ve been channeling that anger into articulate, revolutionary lyrics, as much to educate as to entertain. They use deep Funk basslines with layered rhymes from Chuck D interspersed with funny quips from Flava Flav (notorious for wall clocks hung around his neck). The beats, rife with police sirens, screeches, and heavy sampling, speed each tune to a cathartic release. Anyone who thinks that racial equality has been reached in the U.S. can think again, and let Public Enemy do the talking.

(And they were awesome when Brian and I saw them at Bonnaroo last summer!)

With relationship drama recently behind her, perhaps Sarah McLachlan decided that it was time for a girls night out….or in the case of Lilith Fair (returning after a long absence), an entire summer out on the road with the girls.  McLachlan will release The Laws of Illusion, her first album of new studio material in 7 years, on June 15th.  The Cleveland date at Blossom will feature McLachlan with Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Courtyard Hounds, Lights, Sara Bareilles & more!  I’ll admit that I’m a bit bummed that Heart and some of the other more star-studded names (hell-o, Go-Go’s ?!?) are not on the Blossom lineup.

Hungry for Phish?

Speaking of Blossom, Phish will be there for a show that is now officially confirmed by Live Nation Cleveland for June 12th – tickets will go on sale on Saturday afternoon at 1pm.

For those of you that missed Tegan & Sara this past weekend at the Lakewood Civic, they’ve been added as the special guest for the previously announced Cleveland date for Paramore.  Tickets are on sale now.

At The Winchester:

The Winchester has several great guitar bookings coming up, including Johnny A. on April 23rd, Adrian Belew on April 28th, and David Knopfler (formerly of Dire Straits) on May 5th.

A wizard of sonic manipulation and texture, Adrian Belew has been the guitarist of choice for the art-rock crowd, playing, recording and touring with Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and Nine Inch Nails.  He has also fronted a version of King Crimson, produced hit records, and currently sustains a lower-profile career as a Grammy nominated solo artist.

Adrian Belew joined David Bowie on his 1989 Sound + Vision career retrospective tour, was featured on the industrial band Nine Inch Nails’ album The Downward Spiral, and produced 2 hits for Jars Of Clay.  In 2005, Adrian was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category for the song, “Beat Box Guitar.”

In his subsequent career as a solo artist, Belew displays his ease with pop songwriting and singing which yielded the hit “Oh Daddy.”  He continues to write and tour.  See him live in an intimate solo show at The Winchester!  Showtime is 9pm.

I’ll admit that I was shocked when I heard about the David Knopfler booking – as big of a Dire Straits fan as I am, I had no idea that he was still making music!

David Knopfler played rhythm guitar in Dire Straits behind his brother on lead guitar, and appeared on Dire Straits’ first two albums (1978’s Dire Straits and 1979’s Communiqué). He recorded their third album, Making Movies, with the band before leaving to become a solo artist, and was left uncredited on the album.

After leaving Dire Straits, Knopfler released his first solo album in 1983, titled Release.  Mark Knopfler and John Illsley both guested on the album.  The album was suported by the single “Soul Kissing”, on the label, Peach River Records.  The single was a minor commercial success after Knopfler retrieved the rights from the record label.

His album Lifelines in 1991, released by Phonogram, was recorded in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios.  In May 2005, he published a book of poetry titled Blood Stones and Rhythmic Beasts, which was released by the UK’s BlackWing books.  He is coming off a mostly sold out tour of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Canada, Turkey and Australia.

On a related note, the classic Dire Straits live video Alchemy will be issued for the first time on DVD and Blu-ray on May 18th via Hip-O Select.  The classic concert film was fully remixed and prepared for release late last year.
