In my list of classic R&B / soul performers, Otis Redding easily lands in my top 5. It’s criminal after all of these years of enjoying Redding’s music, my overall knowledge of his complete output is still woefully incomplete. I definitely need to dig further into his catalog, and one of these days, I will do that.
For now though, my eyes and ears perked up when I read the news that Shout! Factory had a new CD/DVD retrospective planned to further celebrate Redding’s legacy. Otis Redding – The Best See & Hear hits stores on October 20th, close on the heels of another upcoming Redding Shout! Factory release, Respect: Otis Live 1967, which will be in stores on August 25th.
The two-disc The Best: See & Hear is a unique addition to Otis Redding’s catalog, containing a CD of his greatest hits for Stax/Volt, including the Black and Pop Chart toppers “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now),” “Respect,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Try A Little Tenderness,” and seven others.
The set also contains a 12-track DVD, directed by D.A. Pennebaker (Don’t Look Back, Monterey Pop), featuring 9 classic Otis Redding performances from 1967, as well as performances by Booker T. & The MG’s and Sam & Dave.
Here’s a track listing for the CD and DVD. I’m happy to see that the CD portion includes one of my favorite tracks, “I’ve Got Dreams To Remember.”
