Thursday night found me crossing another artist off of my rock and roll bucket list with a road trip to Detroit Rock City to see the opening night of a fresh set of U.S. dates for Tears for Fears. In a word, it was “awesome.” Curt and Roland sounded great and the show went a long way towards erasing my regret of missing the band on The Seeds of Love tour in 1990 at Public Hall. (And having a bootleg of that ’90 show probably helped a lot to erase the rest of that pain.) I would have liked to hear a few tracks like “Badman’s Song” and “Elemental” that were missing from the setlist, but the surprise inclusion of “Advice For The Young At Heart” (from The Seeds of Love) in the encores, making its first setlist appearance in 20 years, more than made up for anything that might have been “missing” from the setlist.
Here’s a setlist and a bit of video for you:

What a great set!!
Matt – great blog! It's now on my reader list. FYI – the drummer you saw with TFF is the same guy who plays with us in Venice – the band you saw when we met. Small world… Talk soon!
Yeah…I know! I was hoping to get a chance to say hey to Jamie, since I
missed talking to him in Springfield, but the casino ended up being pretty
huge and packed. As Matt L. said to me when I emailed him after I got back
from the Venice show, I should have said hey at that point. Oh well – I'll
see him at the next Springfield show, perhaps. It was cool to see Jamie in
a different environment.
i missed the hsow hope to see them in DC next month!
Matt – not to be a stinker here – but the TFF show in 1990 was at Music Hall, not Public Hall like the bootleg has long said. That was my first concert ever in Cleveland, and I specifcally remember the seats and venue. Debbie Harry (of Blondie, here solo) opened up the set. The cool thing about this past spring’s Rock Hall Benefit was to hear Curt Smith singing in Public Hall only a few feet away from where I originally saw him back in 1990…
Music Hall/ Public Hall….what’s a few extra seats? I would have loved to have seen that show!
