The 12 Boots of Christmas – Set the Way-Back Machine for 1989

Peabody and Sherman

Installment number five of the 12 Boots of Christmas finds us traveling twenty years into the past to December 4, 1989.

We’ve set the dials for Peabody’s Down Under in Cleveland’s Flats entertainment district and our hosts are WMMS, the home of the Buzzard, as the station presents another in the longtime “Coffee Break Concert” series.

The guests of honor are the Del Fuegos, touring in support of their current release, Smoking in the Fields.

With three albums and their best shot at commercial success behind them, the band is on fire as they promote the new record and show that they are still a viable contender in the world of rock and roll.

They come out smokin’ with a wicked version of “Longest Day,” the title cut from their 1984 debut album, and proceed to lay down 15 more songs before walking off with a simple “Thanks a lot.”

Seven tunes are from the new album including the Stones-like “Move With Me Sister,” the strutting and simmering “Offer,” and the rock-solid “Headlights.”

Much like yours truly, Santa likes his rock and roll straight up and loose with room for a little R&B and a little twang, so when we went looking for shows worthy of being one of the 12 Boots of Christmas, this one jumped out of the vault and I laid it on the big guy.

Santa grooved, Santa approved, and so I present you with Boot #5.

As is the holiday standard, this show is crisp, clean and ready to be TURNED UP LOUD, so please be prepared to fulfill your responsibility as listener and do just that.

  1. This is one of my favorite Cleveland boots (and I have a hunch that you've got another one of my favorites up your sleeve.) I hadn't really heard much from the Del Fuegos, but my curiosity grew after hearing Juliana Hatfield name check them in “My Sister.” This show really is a killer, and captures a really great performance from the band.

  2. Downloading now. Haven't heard them in a long while. On a side note, a long ago roommate drove a Renault Fuego, named—Del, of course.
