New Releases This Week: Paul McCartney, Starship, Them Crooked Vultures

The holidays must be coming up, because there are quite a few reissues on tap, and also new music from Boyz II Men (yipe!), John Mayer and the “super-group” pairing of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and Zep bass player John Paul Jones as Them Crooked Vultures.

John Mayer - Battle Studies

John MayerBattle Studies – Mayer continues to impress with every album that he puts out.  If you’ve given Mayer a lot of shit for his past material like “Your Body Is A Wonderland” – which we’ll agree, is just asking to be made fun of – you should give him another look.  Snag it on vinyl, to boot!
Paul McCartneyGood Evening, New York City – Oh my God, ANOTHER live album from Sir Paul?  Sure thing, but this one has different songs, ya know?  Also available on vinyl.

Starship No Protection/Love Among The Cannibals – If you want to start fireworks, mention any album from Mickey Thomas and Starship.  It’s unbelievable fun, I tell you.  This 2 CD reissue is remastered from the original RCA/Grunt tapes so that you’ll hear every last syllable from Thomas with never before heard clarity. Beware.

  1. There aren't too many bands I'll roadtrip to Detroit for to see a show: Metallica, Living Colour, and Dream Theater to name a few, but I went to Them Crooked Vultures' show at Fillmore Detroit last month, and I'm glad I did. Looking forward to hearing the album (opted not to listen to the stream).

  2. Sounds pretty cool. I'm curious to see 'em, for sure. It would be great to see Grohl back behind the kit, which is one thing I really enjoyed about the new Nirvana Reading DVD release.

  3. An observation: If David Bowie and Sheryl Crow had a baby boy, would it grow up to look like John Mayer?

  4. A few additional notes: After listening to the Sheryl Crow reissue – I'm curious to know what other fans will think of this package. I don't feel like I was missing anything worth missing, after hearing the entire second disc of the reissue. As I've said elsewhere, I would much rather have a live show from the period on that second disc. She did quite a few radio broadcasts on that tour, so it would have been possible.

On the other side of things, the McCartney live album is pretty great. Chatter on the net suggests that there might have been some sweetening to accommodate notes that he can no longer hit. Makes no difference to me – setlist and performance wise, it's great to these ears!

I still have to check out the DVD portion…I'm hoping that it's not chopped up like all of the other McCartney DVDs have been previously…..although I'm hearing that some Beatles performance footage was spliced in to “I'm Down” so that probably answers the question on that one.

  5. That's a scary thought. And would John Mayer hook up with SC before he learned that she was his mother?

  6. 2xCD reissue of lloyd cole's Rattlesnakes!! how has this escaped me? a brilliant record. do i really need the bonus disc? ah, decisions…

also, i have a promo of the katy perry DVD. i'm thinking a little holiday viewing is in order…
