Nope this isn’t Ben Folds, Snoop, or even Dre related, but this is instead a post for my fellow music geeks. Take a couple of Chicago’s well known music critics who happen to work for competing newspapers, and give them a radio show to discuss, argue, and dissect music. The result is a weekly radio program called Sound Opinions, hosted by Greg Kot (Chicago Tribune) and Jim DeRogatis (Chicago Sun-Times.)
The show is essential listening for us music fans that are just a leeedle bit more obsessive about our musical loves than most. It’s been quite a while since I’ve listened to Sound Opinions, Kevin Smith’s SModcast, or any of my other favorite podcasts, but the following Sound Opinions ep came along and immediately made its way to the front of my musical listening line.
I’ll be listening to it later, and wanted to share it with all of you – some good listening that will also will add another book to your reading list. Check out the details below:
While the rock stars get all the fame, it’s often interested to hear from the people who got them there. This week’s guest is Danny Goldberg, a longtime music industry insider who has done everything from doing PR for Led Zeppelin, serving as a label executive at Atlantic, Mercury and Warner Brothers Records, and managing such artists as Stevie Nicks, Warren Zevon and Nirvana. He wrote about his experiences with these people in an aptly titled book, Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Roll Business. As he relays to Jim and Greg, sometimes geniuses aren’t easy to work with, but it’s always worth it.
