Pittsburgh band The Gathering Field have achieved “desert island disc” status in my world with all four of their album releases, and are sorely missed on a daily basis in my world. I listen to at least one of their albums during the course of an average week, and I finally got to see a proper show from The Gathering Field last July. It was an experience that found me standing for nearly two hours with constant goosebumps because of how fantastically good the entire evening of music was.
And now, frontman Bill Deasy smacks another one out of the park with his newly released collaboration Thomas Jefferson’s Aeroplane, which is a band project with former Brownie Mary guitar player Rich Jacques.
Deasy and Jacques split lead vocal duties on the project, and as it happens, one of my favorite tracks from the disc, features a Jacques lead vocal.
Last night I called you
from California
LA was burning
you said I tried to warn you
Well I kind of like it
despite the changes
and being away is
a little strange
Thomas Jefferson’s Aeroplane – Know That I Would
hear additional tracks on the TJA Myspace page.
You find yourself unexpectedly in a new location, removed from the guy/girl that made up the other half of the relationship. It’s strange, but in a weird way, you like where things are at, and how they turned out. Everything worked out for the best.
Still, your mind wanders, and you think of the things that you might have done differently. “Know That I Would” puts those feelings into song, almost as if you are hearing a phone conversation that you shouldn’t.
Brilliantly executed, “Know That I Would” is merely one track from a project that brings together the best of both worlds from Deasy and Jacques to form something new that is strangely familiar, yet at the same time, distinctly different.
Here are a couple of interviews about the project:

Good catch! This TJA release is at the top of my “Best CD of the Year” list. And as good as “Harder Than It Needs Be” sounds on the disc, you should it hear it live — they ROCKED Pittsburgh last night!!
Oh dang – you are killing me. I wanted SO bad to catch the Pittsburgh show last night, but had prior commitments. And more prior commitments will keep me from catching The Gathering Field show next month as well.
Hoping that I will get another shot at a TJA show before the year is out.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for the feedback!
Saw TJA at the Los Angeles show and it was awesome. It was fairly packed and everyone was buzzing about these guys afterwards.
awesome, Dan – thanks for stopping by!!
