Contest: Win a copy of Purple Rain on vinyl!
Written by: Matt Wardlaw
Howdy folks!
We're in the midst of a holidays-related break from posting, and until normal posting resumes, we're going to wrap up the year with a couple of contests!
Earlier this year, Tom and the fine folks at Because Sound Matters/Warner Brothers sent us a mighty fine vinyl care package made up of a hefty selection of their latest releases. As we continue to plow through the ample slabs of vinyl, it seemed appropriate to offer up a choice item from that package for your listening pleasure!

The legendary Prince album Purple Rain marked its 25th anniversary this year, and Warner Brothers celebrated that milestone with a fresh release of Purple Rain on 180 gram vinyl, mastered directly from the original master tapes! The new pressing is a beaut, and we'd love to hook one lucky ATV reader up with their very own copy to enjoy!
Send us an email here, with "Prince vinyl" in the subject line, and we'll enter you for the chance to win - it's that simple!
Good luck!

Cleveland Vinyl News: Gotta Groove Records
Written by: Matt Wardlaw
I've been very excited about the arrival of Gotta Groove Records, the new vinyl pressing plant that finally opened recently near Ante Up Audio. As one of only a handful of vinyl pressing plants in the country, it's pretty cool that they decided to set up shop right here in Cleveland!
A mention for Gotta Groove is long overdue here on ATV, and I'd like to point you towards Jeff Niesel's excellent piece on Gotta Groove, which you can find in this week's issue of Scene Magazine. The story is an inspiring read for both Clevelanders and vinyl nuts alike, and I hope that the major and indie labels (and anyone that wants to press up some vinyl!) will come knocking on Gotta Groove's door soon!

Grab yourself a copy on the streets, or check out out online right here!

Bill from I Rock Cleveland took a trip to check out Gotta Groove and shares plenty of pictures from his trip.
Occasional ATV scribe and all-around good guy CB also took a tour of Gotta Groove, and while we're secretly a little bit sad that he didn't perish in some sort of vinyl pressing mishap, we still enjoyed reading his account of the experience.

The holidays must be coming up, because there are quite a few reissues on tap, and also new music from Boyz II Men (yipe!), John Mayer and the "super-group" pairing of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and Zep bass player John Paul Jones as Them Crooked Vultures.
Kris Allen - Kris Allen - You know, the American Idol dude. Somebody's excited about this release, but it ain't me.

David Bowie - Space Oddity (40th Anniversary Edition) - Also available on vinyl.
Boyz II Men - Love - A covers project from the 90s Philly soul lovin' guys, including a cover of "Open Arms" by Journey.
50 Cent - Before I Self Destruct - New album, produced by Dr. Dre, Eminem, and a bunch of other guys that could kick my ass. With that in mind, I've got nothing but good things to say about this album.

Those of you that are still putting your pocketbooks back together after picking up last week's new releases, will probably be a tad dismayed to learn that there is a whole new batch of new releases again this week. This week's releases include a new holiday album from Tori Amos, yet another new album from Bon Jovi, and a righteously awesome box set from AC/DC, maaaaan.
For Clevelanders and fans of pop culture in general, the newly released soundtrack for A Christmas Story, unavailable prior to now, is a wonderful holiday gift!

David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name (18o gram vinyl edition)
Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash (18o gram vinyl edition)

Sesame Street - 40 Years of Sunny Days (DVD)
Stephen Stills - Stephen Stills (180 gram vinyl edition)
Spandau Ballet - Once More - Those of you that had bets that Spandau Ballet would never make another new album? You lose!

Written by: Matt Wardlaw
The Record Store Day folks are having another one of their semi-annual Vinyl Saturday events on, um, Saturday, across the United States and perhaps even in parts of Canada - we didn't get a chance to check in with our Canadian neighbors on that point.
Perhaps coincidentally, our pal Pete at Blue Arrow Records is having a sale on Saturday afternoon from 2pm-5pm. During that time span, you'll have the opportunity to go in the stockroom at Blue Arrow to pore through excess vinyl that can be yours at the cost of five albums for $1!

We just got some exciting news from the folks at Warner Brothers announcing that they will have a booth at the annual WFMU Record Fair, happening this weekend in New York City.
Music fans will have first crack at getting their hands on the new vinyl edition of R.E.M's Live At the Olympia in Dublin/39 Songs, an exciting new Neil Young box set and a limited vinyl pressing (200 copies) of Embryonic, the latest album from The Flaming Lips.

The R.E.M set was pressed/assembled by Furnace MFG, a Fairfax, VA-based company that will also be handling the vinyl edition of The Live Anthology by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I'm very excited for both releases!!

View CommentsNew Music: Frank Turner
Written by: Matt Wardlaw

Credit my pal Brian for turning me on to what might end up being one of my favorite releases of 2009, the newest release by British singer/songwriter Frank Turner. Poetry of the Deed is Turner's third release, newly available in stores, and it's truly a release that is rich with variety and full of unbelievable amounts of energy.
Piano loaded album opener "Live Fast Die Old" gives a subtle hint as to what Ben Folds might sound like if he would have gone in more of a punk direction. Turner alternates between big noisy fun like "Live" and "Try This At Home" and acoustic-based numbers like "Dan's Song," which sounds like it could have been recorded on your average street corner on a particular summer evening at sunset. Fans of Gaslight Anthem will love Turner's stuff - it's very much in the same vein, although I'll argue that Turner has better songs. As it happens, Turner is on the road this fall opening dates for Gaslight Anthem, a double bill that packs a lot of value into the ticket price.
Speaking of value - Turner's label Epitaph Records is offering a special deal this week only: Fans can nab the new album packaged with Turner's previous release Love Ire & Song for the low price of $14.99.
Meanwhile, vinyl hounds can snag the newly released vinyl version of The First Three Years, a double LP compilation of rarities and unreleased material from Turner's earlier releases. The compilation features tracks from early EPs, split singles, covers, and other oddball tracks. Grab your copy now from Paper + Plastick Records.
Check out the title track from Turner's new album below, and if you need further convincing, you can stream additional cuts from his Myspace page.
Trust me, you'll want to pick this album up - it's one not to miss!
