Los Angeles, California remains as a fertile birthing place for great bands like Everest (a personal favorite) and more recently, the music of Dawes.
Dawes is one of those bands that was heavily hyped to the point that I was skeptical. I heard their first album and was intrigued by the sounds, but the songs didn’t completely grab me. Still, I liked what I heard enough to keep them on my radar.
This year, when an advance copy of their new album ‘Nothing is Wrong’ came my way, I put it into the CD player (yep, I still do that) and I was floored by what came out. ‘Time Spent in Los Angeles’ was the lead single and it’s also the album’s opening track and provider of instant ear candy. Once you hear a bit of ‘Time,’ if your ears are functioning properly, you’ll want to hear more. Their sound brings to mind for me most vividly, the Southern California sound of the Eagles. Jackson Browne guests on the album, so that’s gotta be some sort of endorsement, right?
If you continue on through the press kit, you’ll hear that Robbie Robertson was impressed by the band to the point that he tapped them to be his backing band for television appearances in support of his latest album. So yeah, there are some notable people that like Dawes, but they don’t need any of that hype and star-studded support in the end, because the music speaks for itself.

Now that you’ve watched that, you can watch additional live performances recorded in Cleveland more than a year ago, when the band previewed tracks that would eventually wind up on ‘Nothing is Wrong.’
Oh yeah, and here’s a Zevon cover – you can’t go wrong with any band that has Zevon love in their bloodline!
Because you’ve all been so good, I’ll leave you with one more new track performed live at the Beachland later that same year. This is ‘Fire Away,’ which on the album, features Jackson Browne.
Now here we are in 2011 and hopefully, a Dawes Cleveland show will come along sooner rather than later!
