Tougher Than The Rest…..

One of the great things about blogging – besides the international fame and noteriety that it brings – is the never-ending exposure to things that are new and cool.  It’s a give and take thing – you give somebody something that you perceive to be cool, and they turn around and hit you with a “did you know about this?” kind of moment.

Shortly after posting today’s Springsteen ramble, my pal Emma, host of the excellent Cleveland radio show The Occasional Detour, got in touch and asked me if I had heard the Camera Obscura cover she had played of Springsteen’s “Tougher Than The Rest”.  A cover of one of my favorite Bruce tunes by a group that sits high on my list of “groups I’ve been meaning to get into” – this, was something that I had to hear!

First, I dialed up Youtube, expecting that there might be video of the band performing said cover.  And sure enough, I found the following video of Camera Obscura performing live on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.

A little bit of research in the Youtube comments led me to discover that a studio version of the cover was released recently as the B-side of Camera Obscura’s latest single, “The Sweetest Thing”.  If you’re like me, I’m guessing you’ll be purchasing that single immediately after watching the above video.  Camera Obscura are now on my list to acquire mucho music from, ASAP!

Camera Obscura

Tunnel of Love vibes must be in the air today, because elsewhere on Twitter, Dave Lifton tweeted a link to Burning Wood’s weekend post of acoustic performances of tracks from Tunnel of Love, captured at various Springsteen dates on the Devils and Dust tour in 2005.  More and more, I’m asking myself – why the heck didn’t I catch Bruce on the Devils and Dust tour?

One final Bruce-related link to send you properly on your way into weekend bliss – I’ll point you towards Outlaw Pete and Blogness on the Edge of Town for a look at some of the other artists that have taken a crack at covering “Tougher Than The Rest” over the years, including a couple of twang-tastic versions by Chris Ledoux and Travis Tritt.

Yee-Ha!

  • Thanks for the links!
  • They did this first on Vic Galloway Radio Scotland show, brilliant! Anyone else thinking Cowboy Junkies?
  • Matt
Good call. As a lover of all things Cowboy Junkies, I can get behind that thought.

    What he said!
  • pete_chianca
    Er, "he" being Dave.
  • I like the idea of you being called Outlaw Pete.

    Signed,
    Hazy Davy
  • Matt
Dave, I think you mighta just scored yourself a new (obvious) nickname with this comment, to be used in all future blog posts referencing the former Dave from Wings for Wheels.
  • I'm fine with Hazy Davy, especially in comparison with Outlaw Pete.
  • pete_chianca
I'm fine with Outlaw Pete. The only other Pete in all of Springsteen is the guy he dedicates "Hard to be a Saint in the City" to on Hammersmith. ("This one's for Pete!")

Interestingly, when I was six months old, I too had done three months in jail. I don't like to talk about it.
  • Camera Obscura also do a sweet cover of Super Trouper that's worth seeking. They played Columbus back in July and did a great show.
  • Nice find, Matt. Thx. Hey, do I count as your "international acclaim"?
  • Matt
You know, I said that completely tongue in cheek, but now that you mention it....
  • Matt - can't believe you didn't catch the Devils and Dust tour! I saw him at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis in 2005. He performed "Backstreets" solo on the piano! I have a review of the show on my blog.
  • Matt
Too many concerts, not enough time or $ sometimes :-) That being said, I definitely should have been out there for Devils and Dust. The show that you saw definitely looks stellar. I would have loved to have heard Nothing Man and Cynthia!!

Also, I am looking forward to hopefully catching a show at the Fox sometime soon - it sounds like a great venue.
  • Understandable...Las week I should have been at Neko Case on Thursday and Son Volt on Friday when they played at The Pageant, but I wasn't. You should get your friend Annie to score you some tickets. Over the years at the Fox I have seen Robert Plant, Bob Dylan (twice), Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Waits, Springsteen and probably more. Great venue!
  • Matt
Funny that you should mention Indigo Girls - they're very high on my list of artists that I love and haven't seen - hopefully I will take care of that this year. Came really close to seeing 'em last year in Columbus, but had to bail at the last minute. Annie really enjoyed that Neko Case show last week - I saw Neko earlier this year and was underwhelmed by the show that I saw, but I think it might have been an off night. Planning to catch another Neko show one of these days.
