We've got some great mixes in hand and on the way - where is yours?

About Today's Mix:

We're in the midst of a spontaneous vacation-induced break here at Addicted to Vinyl - apologies for the delay on this week's mix - I have been unexpectedly away from my normal internet connection!  Enjoy this mix, and we'll see ya with more updates sometime early next week!

Every time that a holiday comes around, I have the thought that I should get Mel to make a special holiday mix for the occasion.  And pretty much every holiday, with one exception, I forget and move on to other mixes!

With Halloween approaching, I got a Halloween gift in my mailbox that quickly identified itself as something I should share with all of you here!

Today's mix comes from the folks at Highly Rec'd - The Monthly Mixtape!   Each month, Highly Rec'd delivers an awesome new mix for your hungry ears, straight to your email!  Add your name to the Highly Rec'd mailing list here, and you too will start to receive awesome mixes on a monthly basis!  I've been meaning to feature one of their mixes here for a while, so here it is at last for your enjoyment!

Written by:

We just got some exciting news from the folks at Warner Brothers announcing that they will have a booth at the annual WFMU Record Fair, happening this weekend in New York City.

Music fans will have first crack at getting their hands on the new vinyl edition of R.E.M's Live At the Olympia in Dublin/39 Songs, an exciting new Neil Young box set and a limited vinyl pressing (200 copies) of Embryonic, the latest album from The Flaming Lips.

R.E.M. Live at the Olympia

The R.E.M set was pressed/assembled by Furnace MFG, a Fairfax, VA-based company that will also be handling the vinyl edition of The Live Anthology by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.  I'm very excited for both releases!!

The full press release from Warner Brothers follows after the jump:

The King of the Blues and the Pied Piper of Prog-Rock

Written by:

Hey there music lovers, it’s time for some video to go with our audio.  Today, we’ll look at two recent DVD releases: B.B. King Live at Montreux 1993 and Jethro Tull: Living With The Past.

Smilin BB King

For those of you whose only reference to B.B. King is his appearance in the U2 film Rattle and Hum, it’s time for some education.  King is one of the finest American blues guitarists, living or dead, whose distinctive soloing and soulful vocals influenced such rock legends as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck in addition to anyone who has ever played the blues.  His Grammy award-winning version of Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins’ “The Thrill Is Gone” cemented his place as a star and a true crossover artist in the late sixties.

He reached out to rock audiences for the first of several times as the opening act for the Rolling Stones 1969 U.S. tour. His list of later collaborators is long and features Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert King, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Katie Webster, Gary Moore, Clapton and many others.

Traveling on the Super Highway with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Written by:

I'll admit it - I've been holding something back from all of you, because for the past month, I've been on a secret road trip.  I've been on the road with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, traveling with the band on the maiden voyage of their Superhighway Tour.

Tom Petty - The Live Anthology

Supporting the release of the highly anticipated release of The Live Anthology in November, the Superhighway Tour is a unique first for both fans and the band.  There are no tour buses, no roadies, no security guards checking tickets at the door, and actually, all of the tour dates have for the Superhighway Tour have already past.

Cleveland Bachelor’s Show of the Week – Unsparing Sea

Written by:

Hello ATVians!

How are thee? Living life to the fullest, I hope. If you have been, let's keep it continuous (to borrow Sammy Sosa's rather odd parlance). If not, here's your chance. The upcoming week is a grand one for live music performance. Paleface is playing what used to be called the Matinee (on W. 25th in Cleveland, not the one in Akron) on Monday, St. Vincent is coming to the Beachland on Tuesday, Langhorne Slim is at the Grog while Elusive Parallelograms are at Now That's Class on Wednesday, Saul Williams hits House of Blues on Thursday, Captured! By Robots rolls through the Grog Shop on Friday, and Drummer splits the bill with The Royal Bangs and Other Girls in the Beachland Ballroom on Saturday. A very solid week of rock and we still haven't gotten to the CB pick to click!

Won’t get fooled again….

Written by:

...unless you still need tickets to see Roger Daltrey at the House of Blues here in Cleveland on November 3rd.

Mr. Daltrey's rock and roll performance in Cleveland is officially sold out.

For those that have tickets for the HOB show, it sounds like you'll be enjoying a good show - check out a recent show review from the LA Times!

Daltrey got some all-star help at last week's Seattle date at the Showbox from longtime pal Eddie Vedder - here's some video of the pair performing "Bargain".

And as long as we're talking about sold-out shows, the Guster show at HOB on November 5th, also is sold out.

We've got some great mixes in hand and on the way - where is yours?

About Today's Mix:

For those of you that actually read these intros, you'll recall that I promised a trip back to 1991 for this week.  Well, hold on to your tickets for that trip for another couple of weeks - I've decided to push it back and welcome a return visit from today's mixmaster instead!

Our good pal Pat the Producer from Radio 92.3 got great response from the mix he gave us earlier this summer, and now Pat is back with us, armed with a tasty double disc mix to rock you into the fall!

I love the concept on this one - here's Pat to give you the setup!

Setlist: Metallica at Quicken Loans Arena – 10/15/09

Written by:

Metallica in Cleveland

You know, it’s crazy when I think about the fact that I’ve seen Metallica 36 times now, yet this was the first time I’ve seen them in the last decade. I have worshipped this band since I was a kid, but the facts are the facts, and the fact is that they did a solid decade of performing and recording that just didn’t interest me at all. The last two times I saw them were at Blossom Music Center in 1998 with Jerry Cantrell, and then again in 1999 with Sevendust and Kid Rock.

The show in ’98, complete with hardly any classic Metallica tunes except for when they brought out the stools to jam material from the first two albums acoustically, was the worst performance I’ve ever seen from the band I would call the best live act of all time. More upsetting still was their performance a year later, when they were blown off the stage by both Sevendust and Kid Rock. After that, the clangy sound of St. Anger didn’t even remotely interest me enough to venture out to see them. Truth be told, I had pretty much decided that Metallica was done.

Hey man, is that AC/DC? Yeah man. Well turn-it-up man!

Written by:

Oh my God, it's like we opened up the souls of a thousand rock and rolls.....

If the Freedom Rock guys from the 80's were around today in 2009 promoting the new AC/DC rarities box set Backtracks, I'm thinking it would look something like this video featuring Billy and George of AC/DC FanNation.

Hilarious.

Best music blog? We blush.

Written by:

Cleveland Scene's annual Best of Cleveland issue hit the streets yesterday, and we're honored to have Addicted to Vinyl listed in the critics' picks under the banner of "Best Music Blog Besides Ours."

If you've followed the musical history of REO Speedwagon, you might think that it's impossible to find critical love in your home city, but with this nod from Scene, we're now realizing that the problem might have actually been REO Speedwagon.

Sorry dudes - looks like it's time for you to fly!
