Ask me how much I love the music of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker?
Now, ask me how many times I’ve missed chances to see Fagen: My first exposure came via The New York Rock and Soul Revue in the early 90s. Missed them a couple of times. I’ve missed the Steely Dan reunion gigs that have come here, and within driving distance. I’ve missed Fagen solo.
This summer, I salivated as blogging pal Gail Worley caught the Dan performing The Royal Scam in NYC.
So why haven’t I caught the Dan myself? No idea, no excuse.
This Saturday (8/22,) The Winchester presents an evening with Steely Dan tribute Aja, the next best thing to a Dan performance!

Aja recreates the sounds of Steely Dan, one of rock’s most legendary and enigmatic bands with stunning precision and energy. The joint will be rockin’ to all the Dan classics from “Reelin’ in the Years” to “Hey Nineteen” and beyond. This 10-piece ensemble features former members of Pretzel Logic and includes some of the Cincinnati area’s finest jazz, rock and session musicians. No static at all! Tickets are $10.00. 9pm.
How many of you guessed that I will miss this show too? That’s right. I’ve got prior plans to rock it out with Heart and The Bangles. Ain’t no way that I can pass up hanging out with that devastating group of ladies. Oh no. Aja have played The Winchester a few times, so I’m guessing that they don’t suck. When’s the last time that you heard about The Winchester booking a band that sucked, anyway?
Answer: Never!
Jim and Rebecca have some really nice gigs on tap at The Winchester, including return gigs from Dan Reed, former Monkee Peter Tork, and just announced, an encore performance from Rik Emmett of Triumph on October 23rd. Count me in for that one!
As I write this, I wonder aloud if my pal Corey will go for awkward meet and greet round #2 with Tork?
