Happy Birthday to MTV!

MTV turns 28 today.

Remember when MTV actually used to play music videos?

Here is nearly three hours of classic video to help jog your memory!

When did MTV start to go downhill for you? For me, that moment came with the launch of The Real World.

I loved Randee of the Redwoods, and I can still remember turning on MTV one day in the late 80s, and unexpectedly seeing my old NM school bus driver being interviewed about his side business (making stone sculptures, I think.) And Remote Control was certainly a favorite as well!

We didn’t have cable in the early 80s, so I saw MTV for the first time during my childhood visit to Odessa, TX radio station KWES-F.M., and I found myself glued to the television in the green room for nearly 3 hours. During those early pre-internet years, I got all of my music news from Kurt Loder’s Week in Rock, and Rolling Stone magazine.

Ah, memories!  Leave yours in the comments!

  1. the real world was pretty great until the late '90s or so… then again, i was really thrilled to see exotic cities such as boston, san francisco and london, because family vacations didn't take us there. 🙂

i too watched Remote Control religiously with my brother. but i didn't start watching MTV in earnest until 1992 or so. that's how i discovered REM, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. i used to turn it on right when i got home from school — those were the days of Totally Pauly and the afternoon video battle — and call my friend Mandy and discuss what we were seeing. (she lived down the street from me. literally. ah, suburbia.) it still felt rebellious to stay up late and watch headbanger's ball and 120 minutes.

i used to tape songs from mtv i figured i wouldn't hear again. much later, i would set my vcr to tape the hours of MTV2 they used to simulcast in the afternoon. (taping 120 minutes was a given.) i still have hours and hours of this stuff; anyone know how to digitize tape? ha.

  2. When I think of MTV News I think of one of my first TV personality crushes Tabitha Soren.

I watched MTV religiously all the time. Headbanger's Ball, 120 Minutes, Unplugged series, and of course Yo! MTV Raps all opened my eyes as a young music lover to a huge array of musical styles.

Hard to believe it's been 28 years. Harder to believe they completely suck now.

  4. Some time before, I did need to buy a building for my corporation but I didn’t earn enough cash and could not order something. Thank goodness my colleague suggested to get the loan at reliable creditors. Thence, I did that and was satisfied with my college loan.
