Good Listening: Ryan Adams – 9/30/08 – Cleveland, OH

I think Burgo’s gonna get mad at me for this one.

I had the opportunity to go see Ryan Adams and the Cardinals here in Cleveland last week at the Palace Theatre, and I didn’t go.

The Burg-meister has written quite a bit about Ryan Adams, including this posting on some of the new material that Adams has been featuring in recent concerts.

Comrade Adam rang me on the phone last Tuesday about an hour before showtime, with an offer to go to the show with him. Knowing that I had a busy social schedule on the other side of Tuesday night, I declined.

I was happy to be invited, and wanted to surprise Adam with a high quality copy of the concert he had just attended. And sure enough, since Ryan Adams is ultra-pro-taping, I discovered a nice soundboard copy of that night’s show, already available for free download.

I wish more artists would embrace the stance that Adams has on taping. It goes without saying, that it is pretty cool that Adams/Cardinals fans have the opportunity night after night to hear new material/works in progress, that they can download via the Live Music Archive, after they get home.

Hearing a copy of the 9/30 show, I realized quickly that I should have gone. And you should have gone too. But hey, I’ll be there for the next go-around. More than a consolation prize, this might be your new favorite Ryan Adams show. The sound is MINT.

Dig in!

(P.S. Narm – this Bud’s for you!)

  1. You… you… *shakes fist*.

Sigh. Ok, so you made up for it by posting this. You’re off the hook… this time 😛

  2. Made the trip to Cleveland from Chicago for the show, and I have to admit it was the greatest live performance I have ever seen. Never have I seen Ryan so ‘at one’ with himself and with the band – I’m so pleased he has found his happy place with the Cardinals, and this place where he can just be the music. That show will stay with me for many years to come (and it helps that it can now stay on my iPod too!)

  3. I love that Ryan is so lax about recordings…I have so many great live tracks from him. I can’t wait until December when I get to see him with OASIS…two of my favourite artists ever, it’s gonna be EPIC.

btw, I’m playing this show right now and the quality is ACE. thanks a bunch.

  4. Hanan – I don’t have nearly enough live Ryan Adams in my collection…but I have too much of everything else, so I guess it all balances out.

It’s one of my New Year’s resolutions to beef up my Adams collection!!

  5. My only complaint about this show is the proliferation of the (incorrect) title “Mockingbirdsing”.
It’s actually Mockingbird from the Cold Roses album.

What’s even dumber than posting the wrong song title on a fan forum is that nobody has corrected it. Furthermore, it was incorrectly lifted from the lyrics of the song which only make sense if you separate the two words (Mockingbird sing/ sing me what the lord was singing/ on the day he made the water/ the color of my baby’s eyes, etc.).

Sorry you missed it. It was a great show. Though I also thought it was a little odd that they kind of cramped themselves in, only using a small portion of the stage. Maybe they only had 6′ cables… Who knows.
