Cleveland radio buffs, Devo, and Slayer fans, check this out!

Hey Cleveland!

What are you doing Saturday morning/afternoon? I just read about a cool event via John Gorman’s blog:

The Rock and Roll Carnival, sponsored by 91.3 The Summit is happening tomorrow (Saturday) at Borders in Fairlawn from 11am-5pm.

Gorman will be there to talk about and sign copies of his book The Buzzard.

Gorman sez:

I’ll be there along with WMMS Buzzard artist David Helton and Get Down Man Murray Saul.

Also scheduled to appear: Mike Olszewski, who just released a video version of Radio Daze, featuring lots of vintage footage from WMMS in the 60s through 80s; Scene columnist D.X. Ferris, who’ll be signing his book Slayer: Reign in Blood, author David Giffels, who’ll be signing his new book, Are We Not Men? We are DEVO!; T-shirt entrepreneur Daffy Dan; singer-songwriter Jonah Koslen, and many others.

This event includes free giveaways, discussions, autograph signings and memories. Don’t forget to bring your camera.

The event is co-sponsored by public radio station 91.3 The Summit, WAPS in Akron – which has a permanent button on my Internet radio – and a station you should check out – either on air or on line.

I’ve read/heard all of the above, except for the Devo book. For Cleveland radio and music fans, what a cool event! I’ll be wrapped up until 3PM, but might head that way afterwards to meet up with D.X. Ferris who is a friend. Ferris and I haven’t seen each other in a while, and sometimes the best way for us busy types to catch up, is via an event like this.

I’m extremely interested in the “video” version of Radio Daze. Gonna have to hunt down some more details on that one.

Here’s my previous item on the Slayer book by D.X. Ferris, and also a press release that I just got from him plugging the event above, with additional background on Ferris as a writer/fan.

Slayer “33 1/3: Reign in Blood” Author to Appear in Akron

Writers including “Slayer “33 1/3: Reign in Blood” author D.X. Ferris will appear at the Akron/Fairlawn Borders Books & Music (3737 W. Market St., Fairlawn) Saturday, September 13. Ferris will read from the book, sign copies, answer questions, and give away free bonus material. Ferris is scheduled to appear at 3.

“This is special for me,” says Ferris, a reporter for Cleveland Scene. “When I moved to Ohio, I had just read Chuck Klosterman’s first book, and he had just left Akron to work at Spin. I wondered if I’d ever write one. And once I was there, I couldn’t get arrested for the longest time. I couldn’t find steady work doing anything. After a few months, my wife was pregnant, I was still pretty much unemployed, and I got a job at this Borders. And at the time, it felt as good as the book deal did later.”

Continuum’ “33 1/3: Reign in Blood” tells the story behind Slayer’s 1986 LP, “Reign in Blood,” widely considered to be the ultimate thrash-metal album, through interviews with the whole band, producer Rick Rubin, engineer Andy Wallace, cover artist Larry Carroll, and others. The book also examines the album’s legacy through testimony from 47 artists and fans, including Pantera/Down frontman Phil Anselmo, High on Fire’s Matt Pike, Tori Amos, tattoo artist Kat Von D, and Mastodon cover artist Paul Romano. “Reign in Blood” was Grammy-winner Rick Rubin’s first rock record. Grammy-winning engineer Wallace has worked with Slipknot, the Doors, and Jeff Buckley.

For more information on “33 1/3: Reign in Blood,” visit the book’s website here. http://www.myspace.com/rib333

Click here to read “Touring Blood,” which Ferris calls “a European B-side” chapter about the American “Reign in Blood” tour, which written for the book, but not included in the final version.

The appearance is part of Borders’ Rock & Roll Carnival, which also features authors Carlo Wolff (“Cleveland Rock and Roll Memories”), John Gorman (“The Buzzard: Inside the Glory Days of WMMS and Cleveland Rock and Roll”), Mike Olszewski (“Radio Daze”), David Giffels (Are We Not Men? We Are DEVO! and All The Way Home: Raising a Family in a Falling-Down House), Jonah Koslen (“Telling on Myself and Jonah Koslen and Breathless 1978-1981,” former Michael Stanley bassist), Marc Lee Shannon (“Any Ordinary Man”) and Murray Saul (“Get Downs Vol. 1”). Also appearing will be artist David Helton and T-shirt entrepreneur Daffy Dan.

The event is free, and runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Praise for “33 1/3: Reign in Blood”:

“This book rules. If you like the band, you’ll love the book (because it rules).”
— Amazon.com customer Cliff Milledge

” ‘Reign in Blood’ is notable for its brutality, but as the defining manifesto of thrash metal, it is transcendent for its purity. To love rock & roll is to love subcultures, and D.X. Ferris has explained, in stunning detail, how one subculture was defined and galvanized by that single album, and why that definition will never need to be written again.”
— David Giffels, co-author of “Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!” and author of “All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-down House”

“Ferris interviewed everyone who’s anyone so he could deliver the last word on Slayer’s first metal masterpiece. Rock-solid rock joürnalism that deserves its umlauts.”
— Dan LeRoy, author of “33 1/3: Paul’s Boutique” and “The Greatest Music Never Sold: Secrets of Legendary Lost Albums by David Bowie, Seal, Beastie Boys, Chicago, Mick Jagger, and More!”

“Declares Ferris, ‘I wanted to present the story in a way that’s compelling to both rabid Slayer fans and to NPR listeners who love pop music but have never lost a shoe in a mosh pit’ — and he largely succeeds.”
— Dave Segal, OC Weekly

One Comment on “Cleveland radio buffs, Devo, and Slayer fans, check this out!

  1. figures… I work all day tomorrow. That sounds like fun.

I am glad to hear that one good thing happened from someone who worked at a Borders…

That is not entirely true as a girl I used to work with at the Solon Borders moved to NYC to become a dancer. She recently landed a spot in Mike Doughty’s video of “Fort Knox”. She can be seen around 2:17 .

Other co-workers were in Infinite Number Of Sounds.

So I guess I should take back my diss about Borders.

Many good things come from Borders.
