Good Listening: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – Live in New York City Volume 3

Bruce back in the day in a stadium somewheres

This one is for Dan, who threw down a challenge to me in the comments of this Springsteen post:

Hey, in the spirit of the Boss, share a boot! Reach back and find something obscure that has a lot of meaning to you.

Blatant begging. Sorry.

(I’ll also send this out to site regular Ann – hoping for the best for you and yours, post-Gustav!)

Dan later specifically requested a show with “Incident on 57th Street.”

A bit of a tall order, because I had lost track of a large part of my Springsteen bootleg collection, thanks to several moves that have been mentioned here before, and will probably find mention again. I did know where a few of them were, and found a show with “Incident” on it, but was inspired to continue digging.

In that digging, I found the rest of my Springsteen collection (and my favorite live CDs from Don Henley, Tom Petty, Sarah Mclachlan, and more,) and what I’m about to share is not a show per say, but a collection of various rarities that were performed during the initial E. Street Band reunion in 1999-2000. Flynn, a great collector in the Springsteen fan community assembled four CDs worth of great Springsteen performances from the tour, titled Live in New York City – Volume 2 and Volume 3.

Hopefully you guys can deal with nearly five hours of cool live Springsteen?

As you can guess from the title, the CD sets were meant as a companion piece to the officially released Live in New York City double live album. Take that live CD, and add these four CDs to it, and you’ve really got the Cliff’s Notes version of everything that was great about the 99/00 E. Street Band tour. The title is a tad misleading – not all of the performances are from NYC, and instead, you’ve got highlights from various cities across the tour – great listening!

I’ll start with Volume 3, since it has Dan’s requested “Incident” on it, and Volume 2 will follow.

By the way – Dan mentions the Main Point show from ’75 in his comments, which is one of my all-time favorite Bruce shows, and indeed, it has a great version of “Incident.” Grab it from I Am Fuel, You Are Friends with commentary.

By the way, part two – Bruce’s current tour is over, and according to Backstreets, Bruce played 147 different songs over the course of the Magic tour.

There’s new music already on the horizon, and perhaps another movie cameo for Bruce, as well!

  1. Wow oh wow oh wow.

    Just wow.

My laptop is at the office, where the download speed is terrible. I hope you can leave this up for about ten days, until I get home.

I should blog. We are well. I’m in Columbus, Ohio for the week (and maybe longer, depending) but we seem to have come through Gustav just fine.

    Thanks, Matt. You’re terrific.
