Put your 90s sunglasses on and rock out with some of these….

Semisonic – Closing Time

Welcome to September!

My unofficial ’90s weekend drew to a close yesterday with an awesome set from Big Head Todd & The Monsters at Taste of Cleveland.

My friend Captain, forever living his life in lower case over @ captains dead was surprised to find out that Big Head Todd are still kickin’ out the jams.

Indeed they are, with a new album called All The Love You Need, which you can download for free, and a fresh live session recorded recently for the Daytrotter folks.

The Daytrotter session features live versions of four songs from the latest album, and you can dig into the action right here.

Here is some more information on the new album giveaway, from the Big Head Todd web site:

Why free? The BHTM family believes that the music industry is changing. We are a touring-based band, and we want to get our new music out to as many people as possible. We decided to mail the new album to the first 25,000 people who signed up on our website. Then we sent it out to almost half a million people through radio station mailing lists. Now we are offering as a free download on the website or for sale for just $15.

For further reading, check out this blog item that I posted back in February.

About that 90s stuff I mentioned….

Speaking of the good Captain, keep your 90s good vibes going with the Cap’n’s list of picks for his top 60 favorite songs from the 90s.

I know that mentioning bands like Semisonic, Letters to Cleo, and The Verve Pipe might make you smile. In fact, if you’re like me, you probably STILL sing along to “Closing Time” when you hear it on the radio. The Captain has a whole list of fun songs waiting, so hit the rewind button and check ’em out!

P.S. – here’s the setlist from yesterday’s Big Head Todd show @ Time Warner Cable Amphitheater. The setlist featured most of the new album, and also a nice selection of tunes from the pre-Sister Sweetly album Midnight Radio, and of course, the must hear stuff from Sister Sweetly…..except for Sister Sweetly, which wasn’t in the setlist. Arrrrrgh!

Great setlist and a typically great performance from Big Head Todd, who skip most of the on-stage banter, and instead keep the focus on the music. And that’s just fine with me!

  1. I still sing along to “Closing Time”….

I used to pop it in the CD player at the wonderful-fun-to-work-for-they’ll-never-fire-an-entire-staff-the-day-after-christmas Exchange right around closing time to see what the customers would do.

  2. I would have one-upped the creepiness a bit by pointing at individual customers singing “I know who I want to take me home”

I guess that’s probably why you never put it in, while I was working there.

  3. Ooooh, Letters to Cleo! Makes me think of listening to my beloved Melrose Place Soundtrack back in the day 🙂 Per chance, did you own a copy?? It was sooo 90’s — remember Freedy Johnston’s “Bad Reputation” and Aimee Mann’s “That’s Just What You Are”?? Love it*

  4. Correction. . .I somehow thought that Freedy Johnston song was on the soundtrack, but double checked after posting my comment and discovered I was wrong — but, the soundtrack is still awesome 🙂

  5. I don’t think I have that soundtrack….but the Freedy Johnston and Aimee Mann songs you reference are two of my favorites.

I went on a BIG Freedy Johnston kick after hearing that song, and ended up buying 3 of his albums in a row to fully catch up.

I could kick myself for the time that I went to see Michael Mcdermott opening for Aimee Mann at the old Peabody’s – caught Mcdermott’s set, and then left.

I wasn’t quite a fan of Aimee at that point, and fell hard shortly after that.

She’s married these days to another 90s favorite of mine, Michael Penn!!

    you watching 90210 tonite??

  6. Oh no!! You left before Aimee Mann’s Set??!! And, at Peabody’s!! Sigh. . .

Well, I cannot talk b/c I went to the Beachland Tavern a few years ago to see Rosie Thomas open for Michael Penn and then left after her set 😉

We forgot to watch 90210 last night — we were slightly intrigued b/c Tilly & The Wall had a guest appearance. . .did you catch the episode?

  7. wow – left before Michael Penn…..for shame! I saw him twice @ Beachland….he was better the first time that I saw him there, but both shows were great to see after so many years of not seeing Michael Penn shows.

just watched 90210 tonite on DVR – jury is still out, but I think it will be solid…lot of story setup with tonite’s episode obviously….I think that subsequent weeks will be better with a lot of the character intros out of the way now.
