Good Listening: Jackson Browne and David Lindley (revisited) + news of a new album!

A few days ago, I was preparing this post and had to put it aside because of “real world” commitments. Several days later, as I was working on another post, I wound up on the Pollstar site to check a date, and came across newly posted concert dates for Jackson Browne!

I shot straight to the tour section on Browne’s website and discovered that lo and behold (and true to his word at the time of release for Solo Acoustic: Volume 2,) Browne has a new album coming out in September.

The album is titled Time the Conqueror (what a great title!!) and will be on the shelves September 23rd via Browne’s own label @Inside Recordings (who released both volumes of Solo Acoustic.)

Jackson Browne - 2008 Tour

Browne has announced an initial round of tour dates to support the new album, including a limited number of U.S. dates.

A full U.S. summer tour announcement for Summer 2009 will follow.

Cleveland is AWOL on the list, and I’m hoping that I won’t have to wait until 2009 for my first chance to see Jackson. There is a show in Upper Darby, PA that looks attractive, but it conflicts with another planned concert road trip that just popped up, so we’ll see.

I’ve got definite concert regrets for passing up a Cleveland area show at Nautica Stage in the 90s while Browne was touring to support I’m Alive. I’m pretty sure I missed a show at the Palace, as well.

I have supreme amounts of concert regret for not road tripping to Cincinnati in 1999 to see the dream bill of Browne with Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Shawn Colvin, and David Lindley at Riverbend.

What a show that would have been!

Speaking of Browne and Lindley, back when there were about 5 people reading this stuff, I posted the audio from a professionally shot fan DVD that I had just gotten of Jackson Browne and David Lindley performing together at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 2006 (check out a cool review of the show right here.)

This weekend, I was listening to the show, and felt compelled to share it here again with those of you that might have missed it on the first go-around.

Performing acoustically, the date was a U.S. one-off for the pair, after a series of dates in Europe.

And they were dead on.

The DVD is great, and in fact, I’d like to offer a free copy to the first five people that send me an email, with the hope that you’ll share it with other music-loving friends that would appreciate it.

I’ll keep the above offer U.S. only with a disclaimer that if you’re willing to kick in the necessary postage, I’ll be happy to send a copy overseas!

Browne opens with the title track from I’m Alive, a particular track that rings so true with me, and where I’ve been in my personal travels over the past couple of years. It captures for me, that moment when you are pulling the wrapping paper off an emotional gift that you never expected to receive. The kind of gift that as you spend time looking it over, becomes one of the best things anyone could have ever given you.

Jackson Browne – I’m Alive (live)

“Call It A Loan” comes next, described from the stage as “a song about waking up in love.” What an awesome feeling that is, and it’s one that comes with so many different emotions.

Check out audio of the full show right here. There is a little bit of everything – the hits, cool album tracks, and some of Lindley’s material as well.

It really is essential listening for anyone that has ever been Jackson Browne curious. And chances are, if you’re a Jackson fan, you hopefully already have this!

  1. Dude, Upper Darby is literally like 15 minutes away from me. You said in the post that you might be going to a different show, but if you end up at the one in UD (Guessing at the Tower Theater), let me know and we can arrange to meet up or something.
