Good Listening: The Brought Low

So I mention The Yayhoos in one of my recent posts, and lo and behold, the spirit of the Yayhoos saw fit to deliver a genuine real rock and roll band to a club right down the street from my house last night.

I walked a quick block from my house to The Hi-Fi Concert Club, where they were celebrating a re-launch of the club (which recently changed ownership) with a bombastic triple bill of rock, anchored by Cleveland natives The Suede Brothers. Also on the bill, an extremely rare Cleveland appearance by Toledo’s Five Horse Johnson, who rarely tour, but have played shows with, and gotten the thumbs up from Clutch, and my personal favorite of the evening, The Brought Low.

The Suede Bros had been in studio at the radio station this past Sunday, and were talking up The Brought Low quite a bit off the air, and how good they were, so I was excited to see them.

The band that I saw on stage, was completely different than what I was expecting to hear musically. I was expecting a stoner rock type band and got a down and dirty rock and roll band that celebrates the best of everything you love about a good “no-excuses, let’s rock type band,” instead.

As the opening notes kicked in from the New York trio, it sounded like Social Distortion was about to rip the doors off the club. The Brought Low lead singer B.H. Smith looks a lot like Matthew Sweet, and hell, live he even sounds a bit like Sweet….and let’s also mix in what sounds like a healthy amount of Chris Robinson/Black Crowes influence. The Brought Low kicked hard for nearly an hour, and made plenty of fans and friends quickly during their first ever Cleveland appearance. As well received as the band’s set was, hopefully it won’t be nearly 10 years before their next Cleveland show.

The band record for Detroit-based Small Stone Records, and I have YET to hear a bad band come out of Small Stone.

From their bio:

New York City’s Brought Low come on like a boogie rock ‘Wild Bunch,’ clothes sullied with the dirt of a thousand dive bars, dead-eyed from the after show parties and all night drives, as turbulent and unassailable as the city that birthed them. They’re journeymen musicians who walk with the gait of the blues, rock and country pioneers who preceded them and whose influence they wear on their tattered sleeves. Their music is rooted in the vintage hard rock of The Stones, Who and Humble Pie, tempered with the cadences of guys with names like Sonny Boy and Hank, and delivered with the boisterous zeal of a Big Apple street choir.

Since they are in New York, if they haven’t worked with producer and all-around awesome Yayhoo/recording artist Eric Ambel, they need to – I’d love to hear a Brought Low album with Ambel at the helm. That was my initial thought as the band started their set, “surely The Yayhoos must know these guys?”

Check out a couple of tunes from their latest release Right on Time (2006):

All you need to know:

If you ever dug a lick from bands like The Georgia Satellites, Jason and the Scorchers, etc – you’ll love the hell out of The Brought Low. If they’re coming to your town, rest assured that they’ll be throwing down with one of the best rock shows you’ve seen from three guys on a stage – EVER.
