Life continues to make sure that I have a complete understanding of the word “busy.” While I have a spare moment, I want to take a second to document a great musical experience that I had on Monday night at the Beachland Ballroom with a great band out of Dallas, TX called The New Frontiers.
First, let’s flashback to about a month ago: Blogging buddy Burgo and I were having a conversation about new music that we were digging, and I mentioned that I had just picked up Mending from The New Frontiers off of Itunes in anticipation of the Beachland date.
Burgo wrote back, and let me know that not only did he know about The New Frontiers already – he had actually written about them.
And sure enough, he had!
I knew from listening to the album, that I was going to enjoy the show, but I really had no idea how MUCH I would enjoy the show. The New Frontiers are another band that I will put into a category of bands that now numbers two (The Silent Years are the other band by the way) – bands that I’ve seen this year that desperately deserve to be heard by many, because they are ridiculously talented not only in the studio, but also in the live setting, which in my opinion is where it really counts.
The band were in the midst of wrapping up a great set, and mentioned that they had one more song to play…..and my friend Pat yells out “play three more, and I’ll play you on the radio this Sunday!”
Grins spread across the stage as it was sheepishly noted that they are “lazy as a band” and often fail to learn their own material after they record it, but that for that offer, they would serve up three more songs.
And three songs later, it was in the midst of the final song, at the closing end of a set that had already struck gold so many times, that nearly all of the members of The New Frontiers were singing together in unison on stage – total musical connection, totally awesome.
After the show, the band noted that they’ve recently secured a new booking agent who is already getting them some nice dates compared to a few shows that they have played at some venues that were less than desirable. Mid-July will bring a chance for some of you to check out the band on tour with The Honorary Title, and I highly recommend it. Check out the dates on their Myspace page.
They’re currently playing a number of new songs on tour, some of which you can download for free via this session they did for Daytrotter.
Download a cool Gillian Welch cover from The New Frontiers here as well.
Lots of free music in the links above, and it’s all great stuff.
And oh yeah, make sure you read up on Burgo’s take on The New Frontiers right here.

Haha… thanks man! I love the natural alliteration that comes from “blogging buddy Burgo”… it sounds pretty catchy 😛
